  • About a Japanese questionnaire…

    Post by : expatree

One Japanese airline company ever did a simple questionnaire collection.

They firstly asked kids to write down a favorite travelling place and they got the answers such as Okinawa, Mount Fuji, Hokkaido, Hot Spring and so on. Then they placed a secret gift on the table, a “Magic Ticket”, flying to anywhere in the world by simply writing down name in the ticket. Unfortunately there are only two tickets available, it’s restricted to “One ticket per person” policy means it always lacks of one ticket in order to cover all family members.

It’s very interesting to observe kids’ reaction, those parents who stay in a hidden room with a big question of “If kids will ask me to stay here, not going?”

Actually the result is a bit surprised to everyone. One boy began rubbing out the name and said “Next time I will use my pocket money to buy another ticket then going with parents.” Another girls finally gave up by saying “It’s much happier to go traveling with family, even just one day trip, I reject this opportunity if it has to leave someone alone.”

It’s a heart-warming impressive story that these kids realize the most “beautiful” thing. This also makes us can’t help thinking what’s real reaction for Chinese kids in the same scenario. To be honest, we have no sufficient confidence to give a positive answer “YES” because current dominated cramming and unidirectional IQ and EQ teaching has become ever more critical. From 2012, it came up a student who is literally dragging a suitcase already to a primary school, sadly now “Preschool education” is another successful gateway of “Hard push knowledge” in parents mind. Accompanied by parents in class, more and more around one-year-old kids are passive to attend “Intellectual enlightenment” lesson.

Kids from 3 to 12 years old, more than 50% have to accept “Painting”, “Playing Piano”, “Dancing”, “English” etc. intellectual enlightenment classes in their spare time.

USA: Kids help landscaping work or babysitter for pocket money after primary and high school class
Japan: Kids play baseball game after primary and high school class
China:  Kids keep daily studying from 6am to 10pm, 12 classes everyday by 6 days a week in primary and high school

There is a limited vacancies of university enrolment depends on different areas of China. For example, 1 of 190 Beijing students has opportunity to pass exam and finally enrolls into Beijing University, in opposite 41 times higher acceptance rate than Anhui students, 37.5 times for Guangdong, 35.4 times for Guizhou and 28 times for Henan.

Shanghai student has 274 and 288 times higher acceptance rate than those in Shandong and Inner Mongolia.

After struggling in “Super Exam Factory”, students have to face financial issue. In 2016, the official report said the average disposable income per city resident is 16,957 RMB within half year and for countryside resident it’s 6,050 RMB within half year. Compared to public university tutorial fees (general major only), it costs at least 2,500 RMB till 4,000 RMB in 6 months, which occupies close to 27% of total income. With no doubt China has to keep optimizing a heavy unbalanced education resources by economics influence.

Go back to 2015, one institution shows there was nearly 7.2% new university graduates could not find a job after 6 months. For those “winners”, plenty of people had temporarily compromised with current job opportunity because the compensation could not satisfy them yet. In a Chinese saying “Study in university then can find a better job”  seems not work anymore.

We fully understand heavy competition and living pressure narrow down the future “GOOD” opportunity, it results in overheating early childhood education. It’s ever reported 45.5% suicide kids due to study and school pressure. After all, “School or Family” does not equal a “Jail”. We hope everyone recalls this attention, in an effort to curb the growing practice of “Young children being educated in a way that pushes them beyond what children at their age should learn.”
